 Institute Training Programmes

On the Institute structure, there are two academic Directorates to include the Hospitality & Catering Studies and the Travel & Tourism Studies departments.

Department of Hospitality and Catering Services

Programmes:

  • Post Graduate Diploma in Hospitality Management;

Programme Profiles

Programme: Post-Graduate in Hospitality Management

Duration: 9 months

Objectives:
To provide sufficient professional and intellectual motivation to persons with Higher National Diploma (HND) in Hospitality Management or its equivalents to pursue advance studies in Hospitality Management towards meeting the high LOAD manpower needs for the immediate and future challenges.

Course Structure: This course is a one session course of two semesters. Spanning through the structure is courses of two parts namely a major and electives as spelt out in the accompanying tabulated course outlines.

Enrry Requirement: The prospective candidate for this course must have

  • B.Sc./HND in Hotel & Catering Studies or its equivalents.
  • B.Sc./HND in any discipline other than item (1) above with minimum of two years cognate experience.
  • Passed the selection interview.

Award of P.G.D.

  1. To qualify for the Award of Post Graduate.
  2. HND in Tourism or Hotel & Catering Management with a minimum of lower credit from any polytechnic accredited by NBTE or any other institution recognized by NIHOTOUR with at least 2 years industrial experience.
  3. Holders of HND in Tourism or Hotel Catering Management with a pass grade and at least 5 years industrial working
    experience.
  4. Holders of B.A; Sc: B.Ed, M.Sc. or M.Ed, MA in areas of other than a, b and c, but must have at least 3 years working
    experience in the tourism industry.

Research Work: The research work reports after being defended are expected to be forwarded to the coordinating department at the conclusion of the studies.

Programme: Diploma in Hospitality Management

Status: Affiliated to Bayero University, Kano.

Duration: 18 Months.

Objectives: This course is designed to broaden students' knowledge in Hospitality Operation, management and to have a sound foundation for higher qualifications in the hospitality professions and related disciplines.

Course Structure: This course is structured into a four Semester scheme of two years with a total spread of 3 courses.

Entry Requirement:

  • Professional certificate in foood 7 Beverages management for NIHOTOUR or any management related courses passed at lower credit load from recognized institutions.
  • GCE/ SSCE/ NECCO with four credit including a pass in English and Mathematics and two science subjects at not more than two sittings.

Programme: National Technical Certificate in Catering Craft Practice. (NTC 340)

Duration: 18 months

Objectives:On completion of the programme, trainee will be able to exhibit practical skills in basic food and beverage; accommodation and other catering craft operations.

Entry Requirements: Holders of GCE/SSCE/NECO and JSS Certificates with credit passes in Mathematics, English, Biology, Food and Nutrition or Chemistry, Home Economics, Economic, etc.

  • Holders of higher qualifications who wish to expose themselves to food & beverage production and services practices.

  3. Candidates of Community Health Development, School of Hygiene and Nursing.
  4. Employees of food and beverage production establishment.

Programme Profiles:

Programme: Post-Graduate Diploma in Tourism Management

Duration: 9 Months

Objectives: To provide for advancement in Managerial positions and to further develop their professional inclinations while preparing such for master degree programme for capacity building in the tourism industry.

Course Structure: The course is professional in nature and last for a minimum of 12 calendar months. This translates to 9 months of academic work and 3 months for a written research project in the student's area of choice.

Entry Requirements:
Candidates should posses:

  1. 5 credits in SSCE/GCE/NECO, O/L including English Language and at least a pass in Mathematics and in addition to any of the following qualifications.

Programme: Diploma in Tourism and Recreation

Status:  Affiliated to Bayero University, kano.

Duration: 18 Months.

Objective: This course is designed to equip and develop students with the prerequisite conceptual and technical skills in planning and/ managing small and medium size projects.

Course Structure: Basically a skill and conceptual acquisition, this course runs for two academic sessions. The first year teaches general knowledge required for the two areas of specialization that the course embraces and these are management and planning options.

Duding the second year, the students are required to register for additional six courses to the core courses chosen from their areas of specialization. Also, they will be expected to at least observe three months of internship in the tourism industry and related organizations.

Entry Requirement:

  1. Professional certificate in Tourism Management from NIHITOUR or any Management related course passed at lower credit from a recognized institute.
  1. GCE/ SSCE/ NECCO with four credits which must include passes in English and Mathematics at not more than two sittings.
  2. Holders of professional qualifications in related discipline such as IATA/ UFTAA certificate, Advanced Airfare & Ticketing Course etc.
  3. Graduate of Nigeria catering Schools in Benin, Enugu, Kaduna and Lagos.

The DG, Munzali Dantata Was a member of the working group on Vision 2020.

Alhaji Munzali Dantata is a lawyer by training, with a Master’s Degree (LL.M.) in International Finance Law. He began his career in law practice in 1981 until 1987 when he incorporated a travel agency and thus began his journey in the tourism industry.
