THE SEVEN POINT AGENDA OF THE PRESENT ADMINISTRATION

Towards achieving the important goal of ensuring efficient, speedy and effective achievement of its mandate, NIHOTOUR intend to embed in its operating guidelines, seek funding, and work with other institutions towards the actualisation  of the policy thrust of the present Administration as contained in the Seven-Point Agenda, which President Umar Musa Yar'Adua (GCFR) rolled out on assumption of office on 29th May, 2007.

For purpose of information and enlightenment, the details of the Seven-Point Agenda are provided hereinunder:

(i) TRANSPORT SECTOR
The transportation sector in Nigeria, with its poor roads and road networks, is an inefficient means of mass transit of people and goods. With the goal of a modernized and industrialized Nigeria, it is mandatory that the country develops its transport sector. Government has already started this process through the on-going rehabilitation and modernization of the railway. While the reforms might take sometime to take effect, it is an effort that must be sustained.

(ii) POWER AND ENERGY
The infrastructural reforms in this critical sector through the development of sufficient and adequate power supply are aimed at enhancing Nigeria's ability to develop as a modern economy and an industrialized nation by the year 2015.

(iii) FOOD SECURITY
This reform is primarily agrarian based. Its emphasis on the development of modern technology, research and financial injection into production and development of agricultural five to ten-fold increase in yield and production. This will result in massive domestic and commercial outputs as well as technological knowledge transfer to farmers.

(iv) WEALTH CREATION
By virtue of its undue reliance on revenue from non renewable oil, Nigeria has yet to develop industrially. This reform is focused on wealth creation through diversified production, especially in the agricultural and solid mineral sectors.

(v) LAND REFORMS
While billions of Naira may have been lost through unused Government-owned landed assets, changes in the Land law and the emergence of land reforms will optimize Nigeria's growth through the release of lands for commercialized farming and other large scale businesses by the private sector. The ultimate result will ensure improvements and boost production and wealth creation.

(vi) SECURITY
An unfriendly security climate precludes both external and internal investments in the nation. Thus, security should be seen as not only a constitutional requirement but also as a necessary infrastructure for the development of modern Nigeria economy. With its particular needs, the Niger Delta security issue will be a primary focus in this context.

(vii) EDUCATION
The two fold reforms in the educational sector will ensure not only the minimum acceptable international standards of education for all but also strategic educational development plan, with emphasis on learning of skills in science and technology so that our nation can breed her own share of future innovators and industrialists
